NEX Climate Downscaling Products Noted in White House Report

Newly released climate downscaling products produced by the NASA Earth Exchange (NEX) team were mentioned in a July 2015 White House Progress Report Highlighting Federal Actions Addressing the Recommendations of the State, Local and Tribal Leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience (https://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/docs/climate_preparedness_report_updated_070915.pdf).

In 2014 a task force of governors, mayors, tribal leaders, and local officials made recommendations to the President on what was needed to improve the resiliency of U.S. communities to climate change impacts. The task force recommended improvements in the resolution of climate model outputs and increased availability of these datasets to guide decision makers and investors.   The NEX team has produced and released, via the NEX platform, Global Daily Downscaled Projections (NEX-GDDP). The NEX-GDDP dataset provides downscaled climate model outputs for every country in the world. According to the White House Progress Report,

These data are critical for researchers conducting studies of climate-change impacts at sub-national scales, and the outputs support the development of information products that enhance public understanding of possible future climate patterns and impacts at local and regional scales. The NEX-GDDP dataset represents a major expansion of NASA’s 2013 Earth Exchange Downscaled Climate Projections Dataset (NEX-DCP30). NEX-GDDP upgrades NEX-DCP30 by improving the temporal resolution of the data from monthly to daily averages, and broadening the geographic scope of the data from the conterminous United States to the entire globe.”
